Fruit and Vegetable Industry Scholarships Available

The Michigan State Horticultural Society (MSHS) and Michigan Vegetable Council award scholarships for students who intend to pursue careers in the Midwest fruit and vegetable industries. The awards are made available due to the generosity of sponsors, such as:

How to Become a Scholarship Donor

 

How to Apply for a Scholarship

The total amount to be awarded in 2005 is yet to be determined. Scholarships are usually $1,000, but may be more or less at the discretion of the committee. The award is not based on need or academic achievement; however, the selection committee may use these criteria to decide between two or more qualified applicants.

Applications should be mailed by September 30. The recipients will be selected in the fall and the awards presented at the Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market Expo (www.glexpo.com), December 6 - 8, 2005 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Qualifications for Application

Undergraduates must be of junior status and show interest in working with the fruit and/or vegetable industry. Graduate students should also show interest in the fruit and/or vegetable industry and be in need of financial assistance in order to complete their degree requirements. Deadline for application is the first of October.

The Michigan State Horticultural Society is an educational organization with a mission "to encourage among the people a greater love for choice fruit products, to awaken a larger interest in Michigan's horticultural possibilities, and to offer practical suggestions along modern cultural and marketing methods". It was organized in 1870 and currently has 1,400 members who are actively engaged in horticultural pursuits. The Society supports the Michigan fruit industry, which contributes significantly to the health, well being and enjoyment of life for Michigan citizens and people throughout the world.
