EDUCATION
1. Studied at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, UK 1965-1968
-Kew Diploma with Honours
2. Studied Horticulture at Bath University 1968-1972
-BSC HONS Hort
3. Studied for PhD whilst employed at East Mailing.
-Awarded PhD (Wye College -London University) in 1985
CAREER
1960-1963 Ran small family nursery
1963-1965 Worked in Urban Amenity Horticulture
1972-present Employed at East MaIling Research Station (now Horticulture Research International-East MaIling)
- Specialist in evaluation of rootstocks for apple, pear, cherry and plum -selected and released Colt and Pixy rootstocks.
New apple stock AR86-1-25 about to be released.
- Supervised programmes of scion variety selection.
Self-fertile clones of Cox's Orange Pippin and Queen Cox developed and released.
Now supervising trials of Gala and Braeburn clones, developing new apple cv Meridian, selecting apple varieties suitable for organic systems, new varieties of sweet cherry and new varieties of plum.
- Supervised many programmes focused on developing alternative methods for control of growth and cropping.
Work led to release of Cultar for use on stone fruits in UK.
Recent work on root pruning and root restriction.
Recent work on developing new thinning chemicals for apple, pear and plum.
Recent studies on reasons for inconsistent cropping in sweet cherry.
- Now hold position of Tree (Top) Fruit Specialist at HRI.
